Jane and I spent the first day of the Thanksgiving break in St. Augustine. It was just the two of us and we had a blast. We started out at the Castillo de san Marcos Fort.
This is the seal of Spain at the fort. When the Spanish came to Florida with Ponce de Leon they bulit the fort so the English could not attack them. They were safe with its walls of Coquina.
The fort is very very large. In the beginning the fort was built from wood. The fort was destroyed when English Pirate Francis Drake burnt the fort down. They recovered the Coquina from the sea and rebuilt the fort with it. Coquina is made from crushed animal shells.
This was a mortar used by the Spanish to Fight against the Pirate Drake. Its firing range was 1.2 miles or 2,100 yards.
